If I Put Out the Light

I remember,
when I was getting worse.
I stayed up too late.

I kept the lights company.

And then it got better,
I remember sleep.

I remember,
those early days,
I cry myself to sleep
and I wake up screaming.

And then those nightmares faded away;
like smoke in the night.

And I don't like the smell of smoke.

My father doesn't smoke.
& my cat smells like cigarettes in the morning.

It is late, again, and the lights are on.
If I put out the lights, will the smell still linger?
